abstract = "This work analyses the main meteorological features of two events
of upper tropospheric cut-off lows (CL) in the Southeast Pacific
Ocean. The analysis was based on multiespectral GOES imagery for
two case studies, between 7 and 15 August 1993 and 19 and 26
October 1999. It was observed that in the initial stage the CL is
clearly identified using water vapor imagery. The information
contained in this imagery helps to infer characteristics of the
cloudiness patterns associated to the occurrence of CL. The
presence of a cold frontal system associated with a wave pattern
(ciclogenesis/ridge) which extends to the upper levels and an area
of cloudiness in the east sector of the frontal system were
indicative of the CL formation. Moreover, the identification of
jet stream in the water-vapor image (precursor of the
intensification and displacements of the wave pattern) was
important to define the CL formation. On the other hand the CL may
be easily identified in its mature stage over land using infrared
                         imagery.",
